SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Kansas City Royals’ right-handed pitcher Luke Hochevar is scheduled to have surgery on his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), in the next couple of weeks.
The surgery, also known as "Tommy John surgery," comes after Hochevar injured his elbow earlier in the week.
The surgery is named after former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tommy John. The surgery repairs an injured elbow ligament, a common injury among baseball pitchers, according to WebMD.
Hochevar went 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA and two saves in 58 relief appearances for the Royals last season, according to a press release.
It’s unclear at this time how long the 30-year-old will be out.
