YOUNSTOWN, Ohio - Former Univeristy of Kansas head football coach Mark Mangino has joined the staff at Youngstown State as assistant coach.
Mangino, who resigned after the 2009 season in Lawrence, will also serve as the Penguins' tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.
Mangino has worked with Youngstown State head coach Eric Wolford before. Wolford played for Mangino when he coached at Kansas State and the pair coached together there as well.
"This is a homecoming for me," Mangino said Friday in a statement on the Youngstown State athletic website.. "I'm delighted to be at a great school with a great football tradition with a team and coach poised to do great things. Every coaching job I have ever taken was a rebuilding project, but this program is not rebuilding. This program has the potential to have a very good year and that's a credit to Eric Wolford, his staff and his team."
Mangino coached the Jayhawks to a 50-48 record in eight seasons, including an Orange Bowl victory in 2007, but came under heavy scrutiny when several players came forward with complaints about how they were treated in practice.
