Young Mizzou secondary looks to improve during fall camp

COLUMBIA, Mo. - As the Missouri Tigers prepare for their season opener during fall camp, a lot of focus is on the team's defense and their lack of experience.

Mizzou has 13 defensive backs listed on their roster. Eight of those are underclassman.

"We've got a lot of young guys that haven't had a lot of reps or game experience so we are just trying to take one step at a time and get them to the level that we need from them to be able to play," said Missouri cornerbacks coach Cornell Ford.

The Tigers will rely heavily on their upperclassman. One of which is senior captain E.J. Gaines. Gaines says part of his responsibility is to help bring along and teach his young teammates.

"Just kind of teaching them what I know and what I've been through. I'm trying to help them come along like my big brothers helped me," Gaines said.

Last year the Tiger secondary allowed opponents to pass for 2,897 yards, 10th in the SEC.

Mizzou opens the season August 31 against Murray State at Faurot Field in Columbia, Mo.
