What were the turning points for the Chiefs?

This weekend the Kansas City Chiefs face off against New England Patriots. The winner will play in the AFC Title game.

After an ugly start to the season (the less said about that, the better), something changed.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Frank Boal, 41 Action News Sports Director

The losing streak stopped when the Chiefs beat the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead on October 25, but Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger didn't play, so it was a hollow victory.

The season really turned the next week, when the Chiefs traveled to London to play the Detroit Lions. Head Coach Andy Reid said since they were all together for a five-day period, they really got close and decided it was time to get things turned around. No one at the time thought it was going to result in 11 straight wins and a playoff spot, but they knew they were better than their record indicated.

They used the London trip and win over the Lions to catapult them through the bye week and a huge win in Denver against the Broncos. That's when they began to think they had a shot at the playoffs.

The rest is history.

Before the start of the 2015 season, every defensive coordinator in the AFC said, "If you want to stop the Chiefs, you have to stop Jamaal Charles."

Kansas City's most explosive offensive weapon has certainly carried his fair share of the load. When Charles went down with a torn ACL in week 5, although the Chiefs lost their next game against Minnesota, the stage was set for Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware to get their opportunity to shine.

Then the Chiefs started to get banged up on the offensive line. Every player that went in, whether for a series or the duration of the game, answered the call. Defensively, Kansas City lost Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Dee Ford slides in and has a career day against San Diego.

The Chiefs have shown over and over the depth of their roster. Players are not shy about making the most of any opportunities handed their way.

Now they have the momentum of the playoff run, the support of the Chiefs Kingdom as well as the will to reach the equivalent success of their neighbors across the parking lot of the Truman Sports Complex.
