ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Chiefs marked their seventh day of training camp, but not without a few injuries.
Donald Stephenson underwent surgery on his left finger and is out for about a week.
Head coach Andy Reid says Stephenson will likely miss the first preseason game Aug. 9 against the New Orleans Saints.
Running back Cyrus Gray also missed practice because of an injury to his foot. Injuries weren't the only issue at training camp.
First round draft pick and rookie offensive tackle Eric Fisher has been struggling over the last few days at training camp.
He's been trying to make the transition from left tackle to the right side against NFL defenders.
"We're not holding anything back. We're throwing it at him," Reid said. "His hands are a little beat up and you have to bring it everyday. The young guys, they learn that. They're all learning."
Other players are adjusting well to the offense.
Offensive coordinator Doug Pederson says quarterback Alex Smith is proving he's the true leader of the squad.
"He's our guy. We're going to war with him. He's come in here and led this football team, on and off the field. He's studied and prepared himself, and he's improving everyday," Pederson said.
The Chiefs resume practice Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m.
