Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles says making Pro Bowl would be 'best feeling'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Chiefs season may be a disaster, but you can't blame Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs running back is having one of his best seasons ever and may soon be rewarded.

Charles could hear his name called when the Pro Bowl rosters are announced on Wednesday.

"I worked hard," Charles said. "I think that would be the best feeling I felt probably this whole month and this whole year. That would mean a lot. But at the same time I'm just blessed to stay healthy after the season is over with."

Charles has been through a lot off the field this season. His teammate, Jovan Belcher, killed Kasandra Perkins before killing himself. Perkins was Belcher's girlfriend and the cousin of Charles' wife.

Would Charles be disappointed if he's not picked for the NFL's All-Star game?

"I wouldn't be disappointed because at the same time last year I didn't play football at all," he said. "This year, I got a chance to play football again so that's the most important thing to me, playing football."

Charles' numbers this season are impressive, considering he missed almost all of last season with an ACL injury. Charles has rushed for five touchdowns and an AFC-leading 1,456 yards this season. That's just 11 yards behind his rushing total from 2010, when he made his first Pro Bowl team.

But what's incredible about Charles is his 5.82 career yards-per-carry average. That's better than Jim Brown's average. It's the most in NFL history for running backs who have had at least 750 carries.

Charles ran for 226 yards last Sunday in the Chiefs' 20-13 loss against the Indianapolis Colts at Arrowhead Stadium. That included an 86-yard touchdown run to open the third quarter.

The 2013 Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, Jan. 27 in Hawaii. The Pro Bowl announcement will come at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday. Stay with kshb.com and 41 Action News to find out if Charles is picked.
