ESPN source: Chiefs to acquire QB Alex Smith from the 49ers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Chiefs will reportedly have a new quarterback: Alex Smith.

ESPN reported Wednesday afternoon that the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers have agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Terms of the trade, which can't be finalized until March 12, were not immediately disclosed.

The veteran Smith, who was the NFL's number one overall draft pick in 2005, fills what many analysts consider to be the Chief's greatest need: A top-tier signal caller to replace Matt Cassel, who started nine games last season before being benched in favor of Brady Quinn, who also struggled.

Smith led the 49ers to the NFC championship in 2011, and started ten games in 2012 before suffering a concussion against the St. Louis Rams. Backup Collin Kaepernick excelled in his turn at the helm, and the 49ers relegated Smith to a backup role for the remainder of their run to the Super Bowl.
