Jovan Belcher murder-suicide report: Police find grim scene in master bathroom

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The first call came in at 7:45 a.m. Saturday.

Kansas City police officers were dispatched to a home on the 5400 block of Crysler just seven minutes later in regard to a reported shooting.

When they arrived, they found a grim scene: A woman on the floor of the master bathroom -- unresponsive -- with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries.

At 8 a.m., dispatchers received a second call. At 8:01 a.m., police were sent to the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility after someone showed up outside with a gun. When the armed man saw officers approaching, he moved behind a vehicle and fatally shot himself in the head.

When the calls came in, police had no reason to think the two incidents were related. We now know differently.

On Saturday, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his 22-year-old girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, before killing himself in front of two of the team's coaches and general manager.

Belcher's mother called 911 after he shot Perkins, with whom he had a 3-month-old daughter.

The murder-suicide shocked the city, captured the nation and devastated an already beleaguered team. Perkins, known as "Kasi" by family and friends, was an active member of the Chiefs women's organization. Friends say the Texas native loved living in Kansas City and being a new mother.

Perkins was cousins with Whitney Charles, the wife of Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles.

Belcher's family broke their silence on the murder-suicide for the first time Monday, asking for privacy as they deal with his "unpredictable and tragic" death.

The Chiefs went ahead with Sunday's scheduled game against the Carolina Panthers, despite the events of the day prior. The previously 1-10 team upped their wins to two for the season with a 27-21 victory at a somber Arrowhead Stadium.
