After nine season in the NFL, Kansas City Chief defensive end Mike DeVito announced his retirement.

In a letter posted on Monday in the Bangor Daily News in Maine, he said farewell.

I want to thank the New York Jets, the Kansas City Chiefs and all the amazing people I have met throughout my career," DeVito said. "To all my family, friends, and fans, thank you for making an average player feel like a hall of famer. And to the game of football, thank you for the past 18 years, all the memories, and the lessons that will continue to serve me for the rest of my life.

In the letter, DeVito chronicles the first time he played on a football team in high school; the first and last game he played at the University of Maine when his grandfather, Ralph Consiglio, saw him on the field; to when his childhood dream of playing in the NFL came true. DeVito also talks about lessons he learned along the way and the people who made an impact on his life.

The 31-year-old played for the New York Jets from 2007-2012 for the New York Jets and then the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-2015.
