Jovan Belcher was 'waiting for girlfriend' when found sleeping before murder-suicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Police in Kansas City have released new information about the hours before Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his live-in girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, and then took his own life.

They've confirmed Belcher was with another woman hours before shooting the mother of his child and killing himself -- and that he called that other woman his girlfriend.

ROMEO CRENNEL: I don't know what made him snap

According to police, Belcher said he was "waiting for his girlfriend" when an officer found him sleeping in his car outside an apartment complex around 2:50 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of E. Armour Boulevard.

The officer knocked on the window and woke him up. Belcher dialed a number on his cell phone, and a woman -- not believed to be Perkins -- came out of the apartment complex and let him in, police told 41 Action News.

While Belcher may have been drinking earlier, he did not appear intoxicated -- he was not staggering or slurring and was very cooperative, police spokesperson Officer Darin Snapp said.

Witnesses told police they saw Belcher leave the Hyde park buildingĀ at 6:30 am. Just over an hour later and 10 miles away, police got the call that he had shot Perkins at the home they shared in the 5400 block of Crysler.

After shooting her several times, Belcher knelt over her bullet-ridden body and kissed her goodbye, according to police.

Authorities have also released exclusive information about the weapons used in the shootings.

Belcher used a different handgun to take his own life than he used to kill his live-in girlfriend, police said.

Both guns were legally registered.
