KANSAS CITY, Mo - What in the world is going on with the football fans in this town?
Everybody has been campaigning for a quarterback since the days of Len Dawson. Now we're apparently getting one in Alex Smith from the 49ers, and a lot of people are complaining the Chiefs are giving up too much.
Some fans are bellyaching because it's another recycled quarterback from the 49ers. This is number four.
It started with Joe Montana, then Steve Bono, then Elvis Gerback and now Alex Smith. Of course, that was a different regime.

Nothing is official until March 12, when the new NFL season begins, but it sounds like you can count this deal going down.
Multiple reports say the Chiefs are giving up a second-round pick this year, the 34th player in the draft, and a conditional second- or third-round pick in 2014.
Many of you say that's too much for a used quarterback.
Let me run this one by you.
You might recall the Chiefs gave up a first-round pick for Trent Green in 2001. He had been injured and lost his job with the Rams.
The Chiefs also gave up a second-round pick the same year as compensation for signing Dick Vermeil to coach the team.
I don't remember anyone grumbling then, and giving up a one and two in the same draft was a pretty big gamble.
Here's another thing to think about.
There's been a history with this franchise of bad second-round draft picks. Guys like Turk McBride, Junior Siavi and Eddie Freeman, to name just a few.
The point I'm making is, chances are pretty good the Chiefs will get far more out of Alex Smith this season than they will from some lineman they would probably taken with that second-round pick.
We need to put some trust in Andy Reid and John Dorsey.
If they're indeed giving up these high-draft picks, they must believe Alex Smith can get the job done here.
No one really knows. But if you want to dance, you have to pay the fiddler.
I like this deal.
Alex smith is a tremendous upgrade over what we had at quarterback in this town.
That's Jack's Smack.
