JACK'S SMACK: KU seeded fairly in NCAA tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - I've got a favor to ask. Can we all agree on one thing before I launch into my thoughts on the brackets?

Let’s drop all the talk about how dangerous the Eastern Kentucky Colonels might be. They're a 15-seed because they're not any good. It doesn't matter if they jack up 50 three-balls on Friday.

There is no danger in this one for KU. The Jayhawks have earned the right to get one freebie every year in the tournament.

However, I would remind you Kansas is ripe for another Bucknell or Bradley stinker and it's coming, but not this year.

As a 2 seed, the Jayhawks are probably valued just about right. They've lost a lot of games but they get credit for strength of schedule. And I get that, but when you get the best players every year, shouldn't you be playing the best teams?

Here's the rub. The committee grossly underseeded New Mexico. The Lobo's right now are better than KU.  Bill Self knows that.

I heard Dick Vitale expounding on the virtues of New Mexico. He picked the Lobo's to win the game.

The Jayhawks can't defend and it's a completely different team away from Allen Fieldhouse.

In their last four road games leading up to the Big 12 tournament, KU had one win and that was by only a point at Texas Tech.

I still like KU to find a way to beat New Mexico and push on to the second weekend of the tournament.
But without Joel Embiid, that's when it’s over!

So, you all have a good time this weekend in St. Louis.

That’s Jack’s Smack.
