Barring a draft-day trade, the Chiefs appear to be locked in on Luke Joeckel – and good for them.
I cringe at the thought of taking Geno Smith or Matt Barkley or any of those other quarterbacks. Please, don't do it.
It reminds me too much of 30 years ago, the last time the Chiefs took a quarterback with their top pick. It was a big gamble at the time, and they were badly burned and never recovered.

Todd Blackledge fits right in there with the likes of JaMarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf when it comes to all-time QB busts.
We'll be okay with another ex-49er. Alex smith is a lot younger than Joe Montana was – and he's a lot better than Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac were.
Alex Smith can throw the football more than 30 yards. The new coaching staff will let the quarterback be a quarterback. There won't be a bunch of checkdowns and handoffs to the running back on every other play.
I don't know what's going to happen to Branden Albert. He wants more money than Miami wants to pay, but the Chiefs want to trade this guy for a second-round pick. They gave up their No. 2 pick to the 49ers in the Alex Smith deal.
The Chiefs already have eight draft picks this weekend. Throw in the eight free agents they have signed, and it's a much different roster.
It's much better. It's a young group.
The only front-line player who is at least 30 is Derrick Johnson.
The Chiefs have the fourth-easiest schedule in the league. They start with a gimme at Jacksonville and close out the first half with three straight games at Arrowhead.
Now, five of the last seven games are against the AFC West. But teams with good coaches get better as the season wears on.
I don't want to be labeled as a house-man, but I am pumped up about this season.
How bout this? From worst, to first!
Why not? It's doable. It happened three years ago.
Go for it!
That's Jack's Smack.
