JACK'S SMACK: KU fans are spoiled rotten, could use a new mascot

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - You've heard me expound many times in this space on the virtue of college sports fans -- the passion, the love for the team and the university it represents.

At Kansas, all of that goes unmatched. I mean that as a compliment.

Now, in all my years of doing this, I've never seen a fan base that can be so incessantly loud when their team is winning.

Conversely, I've never seen a fan base that can disappear more quickly when their team pukes all over itself like KU did against Oklahoma State.

Look, it's okay to lose once every 20 games or so. That's only two home losses in the last 104 games in AFH.

There is no streak like that anywhere in the college game. KU basketball fans are spoiled rotten.

The football experience at Kansas must be so painful every year that when basketball rolls around, no one at Mt. Oread can fathom the thought of losing.

Bill Self talks about his team being soft, being pushed around. He talked about being roughed up the other day by the Cowboys.

Well, maybe it's a mascot thing.

That little bird, the color of a parrot and disguised as a Jayhawk -- it certainly doesn't invoke a brand of toughness.

Could I dare suggest a wildcat, or say -- a tiger-- to help improve KU's soft image on the basketball floor?

It's just food, for thought.

That's Jack's Smack.
