I could only sit back in amazement watching Chiefs fans going bonkers over the possibility of signing Peyton Manning.
Of course, the media created this circus and still won't let go despite the fact Manning has made his final visits to the teams he's interested in playing for and the Chiefs aren't one of them.
Clark Hunt added some fuel to the media blaze by throwing up that smokescreen last week, teasing Chiefs fans about making a serious bid for Manning.
Hunt is smarter than this. He watched his father get played by Carl Peterson too many times in this musical chairs experience involving quarterbacks on their last stand.
This town went wacko when Joe Montana arrived.
That experience lasted two years. No question, it was fun.
The fact the Chiefs flirted with something good, led to a path of disastrous results for nearly the last 20 years.
We went through an army of used, broken down QBs from Bono to Grbac to Green to probably 15 others in the past five years.
They were both young and old, some had good arms, and some didn't.
There was one common thread. They weren't any good.
Chiefs have wasted about 20 precious years chasing a dream with someone else's worn out quarterbacks.
Will we ever learn?
Peyton Manning has been one of the best ever. No argument but he's had three neck surgeries and sat out last season.
He's about to turn 36.
This appears to be an even bigger gamble than many of those other recycled QBs that have gone through Arrowhead.
I don't get it.
Maybe Manning could lead the Chiefs to a playoff win for the first time in 18 years.
Maybe if he's healthy.
Maybe if the Chiefs can surround him with better talent.
I don't know about you but there are way too many maybes with Peyton Manning.
But here again, maybe he winds up in Denver.
And that's a maybe we didn't see coming.
That's Jack's Smack.
