JACK'S SMACK: There's a lot to like about what's going on in St. Joe

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - I think we're all getting a little antsy to see what the Chiefs are all about. The social media has been blowing a lot of smoke. It's almost like an extension of the team's PR department.

Reporters who cover practice can't tweet fast, or often, enough. A lot of it is mundane. Every catch, every drop, every block is noted in character form through Twitter. You get bombarded with a little bit of everything.

I don't really need to know about the guy who's listed as the 7th wide receiver in camp. I want to know if Alex Smith can throw a deep ball, and if he can, who's going to catch it.

This receiver situation could be an issue. Jonathan Baldwin is listed as #1 on the depth chart. They've got a dozen wide receivers on the roster right now.

The only big-time threat is Dwayne Bowe.

The Chiefs have no cap space so they can't sign anybody. Offense will be better because the quarterback is better and so is the O-line.

I am excited about this defense. Secondary has been dramatically improved. The D-line looks like it can hold its own. Tyson Jackson and Dontari Poe are both having good camps.

And the line backing corp. is solid with three pro bowlers. There's a lot to like about what's going on in St. Joe with the new coaching staff and a lot of new pieces. But this team won only two games last year, folks.

They've lost 55 in the last five years. That alone calls for guarded optimism.

As a fan, my biggest concern is can this football team score?

Clark Hunt apparently thinks so, or why is he paying Andy Reid $7.5 million dollars a year to coach him.

By the way, that's what Alex Smith makes. This owner is no tightwad. He's shelling out $15 million a year to his head coach and quarterback.

It's about time to win some football games.

That Jack's Smack.
