Steven McBee named HyVee Athlete of the Week

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Steven McBee is one win away from achieving his dream. It was a dream that many may have considered unlikely when the season began for Fort Osage.

"No one knew what to expect from us. We didn't have a lot of high expectations, actually," he explained. "Senior leadership really started turning around there in August, and I knew we could be something special."

McBee has made certain of that. The three-year starter at quarterback has led the attack for the Indians. He rushed and threw for more than 100 yards in Fort Osage's victory over Ozark in the Class 5 semifinal.

But he didn't take credit for the win.

"Coming in to the game, we knew they had a strong offense. Our defense was able to hold them just like they have every other week," he said. "We've really trusted in our defense and it's really helped our offense this year."

The Indians have piled up a 13-1 record. Now, just one game remains. McBee and his teammates will face Kirkwood in the state championship.

"This is the most fun I've had. I've grown up around these guys," McBee said. "Being able to play with them for more than a regular season or more than what we have been in the past, it's awesome."
