Jonny Giess soars to new heights for Blue Valley Northwest

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Jonny Giess still can't explain what happened last Friday at the regional track and field meet. Heck, maybe it was his pre-jump meal.

"I think it was my Pop-Tart that I had before me jumping."

There must have been some special filling in that snack. The Blue Valley Northwest senior stunned everyone, including himself, by clearing 7'1" in the high jump. That was six inches better than his previous high.

"I just moved my mark a little bit. So, the run-up was really smooth. It just all came together right then."

Giess has been told that his jump ties for the best mark in the nation this year. His phone has been ringing ever since. He estimates 10 or 11 college coaches have called inquiring about his plans for next year. The 6'5" dual-sport star was planning to play basketball at Rockhurst. However, this may have changed things.

"I thought recruiting was all done a couple weeks ago. Now, it just all opened right back up."

For the moment, Giess is just focused on this weekend. He finished second in the state meet last year. This weekend he will have a chance to finally strike gold in Wichita.

"I'm hoping to get that gold medal this time."

When you jump like Giess, it's OK to aim high.
