LONDON - University of Missouri graduate Christian Cantwell placed fourth in the Olympic shot put finals on Friday.
With a throw of 21.19 meters, he was just 0.04 meters -- or about 1.5 inches -- behind fellow American Reese Hoffa, who threw for 21.23 meters and won the bronze.
Tomasz Majewski of Poland won gold with a throw of 21.89 meters; David Storl of Germany took silver, throwing for 21.86 meters.
In the qualifying round Friday morning, Cantwell finished ninth out of 39 other shot putters with a throw of 20.41 meters to end up in the top 12.
He earned a silver medal in Beijing in 2008 -- the first medal for a former or current Mizzou student since 1992.
