Soccer becoming top choice among young people

OVERLAND PARK, Kan . - World Cup soccer may be finished for the U.S., but its winning effects are still rippling through Kansas City.

KC had some of the nation's highest television ratings during the World Cup.

That kind of exposure is quickly making soccer as appealing to young people as football.

There are now more than 50,000 young soccer players in the metro area.

Many predict Sporting KC's success, its two players on the World Cup team and the state-of-the-art soccer complex in Overland Park are pushing soccer into the mainstream.

College soccer player Ryan Sites said, "The game doesn't stop. Football stops and goes, and soccer is continuously playing."

A National Federation of State High School Associations survey found soccer is now the fourth most popular sport among high school girls and the fifth most popular among boys.
