Sporting KC will play home opener March 16, while All-Star game may come to Livestrong Sporting Park

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - On Thursday, Sporting KC is expected to announce they will be hosting the MLS All-Star game at Livestrong Sporting Park later this summer.

But on Wendesday, the MLS schedule was released. Sporting KC will kick off their 34-game regular season schedule at Philadelphia on Saturday, March 2. It's the earliest regular season match in club history. Sporting will be on the road the following Saturday at Toronto.

Then, Sporting KC will open at home against Chicago on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Network. Sporting will play 13 matches on national television. They will play 17 regular season matches at home.

Other big matches for Sporting include hosting Houston on Sunday, May 26. They travel to the 2012 MLS Cup champs Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, April 20.

Additionally, Sporting KC will participate in the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League. Group stage matches have been tentatively set for Aug. 6-8, Aug. 20-22, Aug. 27-29, Sept. 17-19, Sept. 24-26 and Oct. 22-24.

Major League Soccer said on Wednesday the MLS Cup will be played either Dec. 7 or 8. It will be played again at the site of the team with the better regular season record.

Partial season ticket packages will be released on Jan. 15 and single-game tickets for the first nine home matches will go on sale to the general public on Feb. 7. For ticket information, go to

Sporting KC is coming off one of the most successful regular seasons in team history. They finished with 18 wins last year and a first place finish in the Eastern Conference. However, Sporting failed to advance past their first playoff series after falling against nemesis Houston.

On Thursday, MLS Commissioner Don Garber will speak at Livestrong Sporting Park at 1p.m. He's expected to announce that the MLS All-Star game will be coming to Kansas City, Kan. Stay with and 41 Action News for updates.
