10-car crash causes rush-hour standstill on I-435 in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Ten vehicles were involved in a traffic pileup on Interstate 435 in southern Kansas City, Mo., Monday morning, causing a backup that lasted several hours.

The accident was reported a little before 7 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway at Holmes Road, just east of the Kansas state line.

A semi truck was one of the vehicles involved, police said. Skytracker video from over the scene showed several other cars that had apparently run into the back of the truck.

Only one lane of traffic was getting by between Wornall and Holmes for about three hours, with just one lane closed by about 10 a.m.

By 11:30 a.m., authorities reported the scene was cleared.

At its peak, the backup behind the scene had made its way back into the Three Trails Crossing and onto I-470 and southbound 435.

One lane of eastbound traffic was also closed because the semi struck the median and caused some minor damage to the other side of the highway.

It wasn't clear how many people were injured, but police said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

We'll post more information here as it becomes available.
