Kansas City weathers the cold, but some say it could be worse

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City is enveloped in the kind of cold that takes your breath away. Whether you love it or hate it, almost everyone has to deal with it.

People like Stephanie Hilburn have creative ways to survive the deep freeze. She works as the chicken mascot for Wing Busters restaurant in downtown Kansas City and loves her job -- despite standing out in the cold for hours.

"It's very warm, it's very feathery if you can't tell," Hilburn said. "I can honestly say no, I have never been cold."

Her chicken suit has probably never looked so enticing to downtown workers Kevin Vetsch and Josephina Soria. They are sacrificing warmth for their smoke break along Oak Street, and Soria said it's making her think twice about her habit.

"I've cut down quite a bit, so I think it's helping, definitely so," Soria said.

While most everyone shivers, some Kansas City warehouse workers consider this weather a relative heat wave.

Kansas City Cold Storage is located underground and keeps the warehouse at ten degrees below zero to preserve the food products in storage.

Harvey Randle has worked in the arctic air for 30 years and is one of the few people not complaining about the temperature.

"Just buck up because it's only going to last a few days! I do this everyday!" Randle joked.
