MoDOT issues travel advisory ahead of winter storm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Transportation has issued a travel advisory for the weekend because of anticipated snowfalls of up to 3 inches per hour that could make driving nearly impossible at times.

Rain is expected to turn to snow Saturday afternoon across the state, posing a risk for travelers because of the rate of snowfall and lack of visibility.

The 41 Action Weather team says there could be significant snow accumulations in Kansas City Saturday into Sunday morning.

The storm is expected to continue until about noon Sunday in the western part of Missouri and taper off across the state throughout the day.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are closed because of winter weather conditions and little to no hotel accommodations. Eastbound lanes of the interstate are closed primarily because of winter weather conditions.

Stretches of U.S. 36 and Kansas 27 and 96 also are closed due to poor visibility. In some locations, heavy snow and blowing snow are causing white out conditions.
