(CNN) - Renowned Colorado storm chaser Tim Samaras and two others were killed while chasing a tornado in El Reno, Okla., Friday night.
A family statement says the 55-year-old, his 24-year-old son Paul and 45-year-old friend Carl Young all died doing what they love.
Samaras founded Twistex, the tactical weather instrumented sampling in tornadoes experiment.
The official website says the company was founded to help learn more about tornadoes and increase lead time for warnings.
CNN affiliate KUSA is reporting Samaras last tweeted Friday afternoon, "Dangerous day ahead for OK--stay weather savvy!"
The three storm chasers were among nine people killed by severe weather in Oklahoma Friday night, including two children.
