Storm destroys vendor merchandise at Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Instead of selling purses on Sunday morning, vendors Gay Arton and Sheri Roberts counted their losses at the Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival in Independence, Mo.

"Close to $15,000 to $20,000," Arton said.

An early morning storm ripped through their tent and drenched everything.

"It looked like kind of like a microburst and the walls went in. Everything is soaked. We lost the cash register, all of our inventory," Arton said.

She says this was their first and last year of setting up a booth at the festival, and they may not be alone.

"We've lost all this time and opportunity for sales," vendor Dale Gilbreath said.

Gilbreath has sold Scentsy brand warmers at the festival for the past five years. For two years in a row now, he has had to clean up after a storm.

In 2012, the rain and wind from tropical depression Isaac forced organizers to close early and open late.

"We've lost tents both years, so that comes out of your pockets," he said.

Vendors are working hard to recoup the money lost, hoping Monday's temperatures are mild and dry for the last day of the festival.
