Reports: Beaumont Club is closed for business

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A popular place to hear music in Westport appears to have played its final show. So far, the Beaumont Club's owners have not said a word, but one local musician got the news in an early morning message on Tuesday.

Tom Mag is the guitar player for Looks That Kill, a Motley Crue tribute band. He was looking forward to a March gig at the Beaumont Club until he got a Facebook message from a booker, saying the club was closing.

"I was a little bit shocked when I read the message this morning," Mag said.

Mag said he is disappointed by the closure because playing at the Beaumont Club gave his band great exposure.

"You could pretty much count (on) there would be people that you didn't know that would be there," Mag said.

Live music promoter Jim Kilroy has been booking rock shows at the Beaumont Club for 15 years, but said lately that's changed.

"In the last few years, I haven't done as many things there because there's just a lot of other clubs," Kilroy said.

He thinks more competition from smaller venues has cut into the Beaumont Club's attendance.

Kilroy said back in 2005 and 2006, the club could see up to 500 people at a show. But in the last year or two, he said attendance has dropped to 150-200 people.

Kilroy said little has changed over the years at the club, and believes that could have hurt it too.

For Mag, the music will still go on. Just not at a place his band has come to love.

"Great venue, a lot of fun. Going to miss that place," Mag said.

While the Beaumont Club's owners have not released a statement, the next big scheduled show – the Take Action Tour – has been moved to the Granada in Lawrence, Kan.
