Neighborhood Housing Services of KC completes most expensive rehab in unexpected neighborhood

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Neighborhood Housing Services is a not-for-profit organization helping restore neighborhoods by renovating dilapidated homes and re-selling them.

Its latest rehab project is also one of their most expensive, proving that neighborhoods in all areas and income levels have homes in need of services provided by NHS.

The current restoration project is a 4-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath single family home at 4832 Westwood, just west of the Country Club Plaza.

"The older woman who lived here could not afford to make the repairs or stay in the home so we purchased it and will share the profits with her," Mark Stalsworth, President and CEO of NHS said.

The home on Westwood was totally gutted and a new garage and bedroom was added to the home. The original flooring was restored for the downstairs areas including the kitchen, a sunroom and the living room.
"We plan to sell the home for just under $400,000 and will take our profits and reinvest them in other housing rehab projects," Stalsworth said. "Many people think of Neighborhood Housing Services as a non-profit that only restores small homes in crime-ridden, abandoned neighborhoods; but that's not true."

NHS has projects in Olathe, Prairie Village and Overland Park. The organization purchases homes from individuals and bank foreclosures.

"There are a number of ways we purchase our homes; but the overall goal is to improve neighborhoods and we are up to the challenge when it comes to small $75,000 homes as well as rehabbing homes in the $400,000 category," he said.

NHS also provides existing homeowners project consultation services if those homeowners want to renovate their homes themselves.

"For a fee, we consult with the homeowner to develop construction plans and enter into contracts with construction crews," Stalsworth said.

There will be an open house at the 4832 Westwood on Sunday, August 25.
