Circumstances of Franklin County Sheriff's arrest remain a mystery

OTTAWA, Kan. - The case of an embattled county sheriff remains surrounded in mystery as he made his first court appearance Wednesday morning.

A number of Franklin County residents packed a small Ottawa courtroom hoping to hear more details about Sheriff Jeffry Curry's arrest. However, the hearing was short and offered no new information about the charges.

Curry is charged with official misconduct and interference with law enforcement operations. Deputy Jerrod Fredricks is also charged with interference with law enforcement operations.

Curry and Fredricks were arrested last week and both bonded out of the Wyandotte County Jail. They are due back in court on April 1 for their preliminary hearings.

The Franklin County attorney has filed a petition for Curry's ouster. The court is working to find a date to address that issue.
