KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas man is recovering in the hospital after two strangers rescued him from his burning home.
The fire happened near 38th street and Rowland Avenue, just after 2:20 p.m. as Michael Hudson was passing by.
“I was driving, heading to my next stop,” he told 41 Action News. “I was coming down the street and had seen flames coming out of a house, out of the window bay so I pulled over.”
Hudson knocked on a neighbor’s door across the street. He asked if anyone was inside the burning home.
“I told him ‘yes, there’s a man who lives there,’” said 86-year-old Marie Broadnax. “I said, ‘Get him out! Get him out because he cannot walk! Would you please get this man out? Go in there and get him!’”
Broadnax told Hudson and 41 Action News her neighbor was elderly, had bad knees and could not move—which is why Hudson said he ran to the burning house.
As he broke the windows with bricks, he said another stranger stopped his car and ran to the door. Together, they pulled the man out of the home to safety before firefighters arrived.
“His hair and beard were burnt,” said Hudson. “I just did what anyone else would do.”
Kansas City, Kansas firefighters told 41 Action News they discourage anyone from running into a burning home or building.
