City vending machines could get healthy makeover

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Vending machines could be getting a healthy makeover in Kansas City.

City council members are working on a resolution to require vendors fill machines with healthier options. If it passes, this would start next year.

The resolution would remove sugary drinks all together in lieu of healthier options like juice.

At least 60 percent of the food in vending machines must meet certain health requirements like having 250 calories or less.

Council Member John Sharp hopes to present the resolution next week and says it is a matter of responsibility because many city employees already suffer from chronic diseases like diabetes.  He adds it would help to keep health insurance costs down.

The resolution would only apply to vending machines on city property which would include the airport and the zoo.
