The weekend rain pushed one family over the edge. This is the third time their basement has flooded with sewage water. They say it’s time to cut their losses and move out.

The home at 6503 120th Ter. in Grandview has flooded three times in the past four months. But, it’s not flood waters filling up the basement, it’s sewage water overflowing from the public sewer system.

“It was all the way up to this second to last step this morning. You can see that the step is still wet,” said Kelly West who lives in the house.

West and her family moved into the house in March.

They rented it from owners who recently bought and refurbished the home, marketing the finished basement as an extra bedroom.

“At first, me and my husband were down there and in April we lost our king size bed, some furniture, clothes and a tv,” said West.

After that first flood, West called the owners to let them know what happened.

She says the owners told her they had no idea about the problem and quickly paid to have the damage repaired.

“They gutted it, they rehabbed it and they promised us the problem was fixed. At least they thought the problem was fixed,” said West.

Feeling confident in the repairs, West allowed her two teenage sons to move into the basement.

Last week the boys woke up to the same issue.

“One of them woke up to go to the bathroom, swung his legs over the bed and stood up in a foot and a half of water,” said West, “It is very good he woke up, within an hour it was all the way up to the top step.”

Most of the belongings in the basement were once again a total loss.

“Of course my kids’ lost their beds, their new school clothes, dressers, an iPhone,” said West.

This weekend the rain caused yet another backup of the public sewer system.

West says the owner contacted the city about the issue and the city left a notice of what is going on at the front door.

West says she does not have renters insurance and has lost about $3,500 work of belongings.

The owners of the property have agreed to let West out of her lease and are helping pay for her to move out of the house.

West says they have found a new rental home and will be out by next week.
