Kansans take frigid plunge for Special Olympics

MISSION, Kan. - The sun was out, but the water was frigid. Still, group after group of people plunged into the water at Shawnee Mission Lake for the Polar Plunge.

The Polar Plunge is known as the largest grassroots fundraiser for Special Olympics. More than 800 people participated, raising $70,000.

"There is a little over 1,500 Special Olympic athletes in the state of Kansas and this money is used for their participation in all of their events," said Lt. Michael Daniels with the Merriam Police Department.
