Sick polar bear improving, KC Zoo says: Nikita responding well to treatment

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - He's not out of the woods just yet, but it looks like he's found a path to get there.

Nikita, one of two polar bears who live at the Kansas City Zoo, is getting better, zoo director Randy Wisthoff says.

"Nikita's TLC is working!" Wisthoff said in a statement Monday night. "He is definitely getting stronger,  swimming more regularly in his very own bedroom spa and eating a bit more food."

Nikita has been resting and receiving treatment for an intestinal upset stomach for about a week.

During that time, Berlin, his housemate in the Polar Bear Passage, has had the place to herself.

Wisthoff says the zoo has received suggestions that Nikita be served a big bowl of chicken noodle soup.

"If only it was that simple," Wisthoff said. But fear not animal lovers. Wisthoff says Nikita is in good hands.

"Our teams of professional  veterinary staff and Zoo keepers are keeping very close tabs on every action," he said. "He is getting the very best care possible."
