KANSAS CITY, Mo. - City leaders are considering plans to build a streetcar line that would run mostly on Main Street from Crown Center north to the River Market.
This is a rezoning meeting to give residents of the River Market neighborhood a chance to see the maps in detail.
The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night at 429 Walnut.
The streetcar will give them a new way to get around, but it will also affect parking and other issues. The rezoning will determine what areas would be opened up for more development around the streetcar line.
The parking would need rezoning. The goal is to exempt businesses from the usual off-street parking requirements if the business is within two blocks of the proposed streetcar route.
City officials are hoping to get a plan in place soon, so they can have a better chance of getting a big federal grant.
Funding the local portion with a transportation district tax would need a public vote of people who live in the area along the proposed route.
Public hearings on the streetcar plan start March 6 before the City Plan Commission.
