Westport Presbyterian Church fire ruled accidental

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A landmark church that's home to one of Kansas City's oldest congregations went up in flames Thursday.

Firefighters responded around 5:30 p.m. to the massive fire at the 107-year-old Westport Presbyterian Church, located between Main Street and Broadway Boulevard, in the city's Westport neighborhood.

The massive blaze was ruled accidental on Friday, according to the Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Joe Vitale. It was accidental in nature, with the ignition of combustible materials during the installation of an AC unit on the roof.

Before the cause of the fire was released, A.B. May sent out a statement, acknowledging a crew was working inside the building earlier in the day.

The Kansas City Fire Department, ATF and Kansas City Police Department Bomb and Arson Squad worked on the fire investigation.

Estimated damages were placed between $3 and $4 million dollars.
