Gov't shutdown impacting Habitat for Humanity

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The list of agencies impacted by the federal government shutdown is growing as housing officials say they are losing a big chunk of their funding.

Executives with Habitat for Humanity said 15 percent of their funding comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Officials said that money is used for construction costs, and if the shutdown continues for weeks or months, many of their projects will have to be put on hold or cancelled.

Habitat for Humanity in Kansas City estimates one in four residents in the metro area is living in substandard homes.

Oct. 7 is World Habitat Day, which housing agencies use to raise awareness about the need for adequate homes.
