Chemical reaction prompts hazmat response at Shawnee Mission East

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. - A hazmat crew responded to Shawnee Mission East High School on Monday after an unstable chemical was found in the chemistry department.

The crews were called out around noon on reports of a chemical reaction found in a storage fridge, according to Overland Park Fire Department spokesman Jason Rhodes.

They determined the chemical to be unstable and ordered the evacuation of a nearby classroom. Another hazmat crew responded to help dispose of the chemical.

The fridge was removed Monday evening.

Rhodes said the chemical was nitrogen triiodide, a mild chemical used to show how instable other chemicals are.

A statement on the high school's website said no students or teachers were injured by the chemical reaction, which occurred over the weekend.
