Olathe firefighters train for ice rescues

OLATHE, Kan. - Johnson County firefighters spent Saturday morning preparing for winter's worst.

Crews in Olathe, Kan., trained to save people who fall through frozen lakes or ponds.

They say the ice on the majority of ponds in the area is too thin to walk or skate on.

"We don't allow any ice skating on any body of water in Johnson County," said Capt. Bill Schneider, with the Olathe Fire Department. "We just advice people to stay off the ice: if they want to go ice skating, go down to Crown Center.""

Schneider also reminds residents, if they see someone fall through the ice, do not go after them. Call 911.
