Overland Park officer injured when car slams into rear of police cruiser

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas - An Overland Park police officer was injured Thursday night when a vehicle slammed into the back of a police cruiser while it was stopped at another wreck.

It happened about 10:45 p.m. in the 12500 block of NB US 69 Highway.

The officer, who was sitting inside the vehicle when the crash occurred, was taken to an area hospital with unspecified non-life threatening injuries. Police say he was treated and released.

The Olathe Police Department assisted in the investigation of the crash, which briefly closed down northbound traffic of the highway.

Authorities say the police cruiser had its emergency lights flashing when the unidentified driver struck it. There was no immediate word on if any charges would be filed.
