St. Joseph considering city-wide smoking ban

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The city council in St. Joseph is considering making the city smoke-free.

A proposed ordinance could ban smoking in indoor public places. But, it is getting pushback from some bar and restaurant owners.

Pappy's Grill went smoke-free on its own four months ago. The owners say the decision has not affected business.

"Our concern was there was going to be a drop of anywhere from 15 to 30 percent of business right away," owner owner Steve Margulies said. "But it never dropped. It stayed level, it immediately went up and then it's been steady since then."

The smoking ban could either be passed by the city council or as a ballot initiative.

The city is looking for more public input before the ordinance is officially drafted.
