Longtime employee sues KU for age discrimination

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - A woman is alleging in a federal lawsuit that the University of Kansas laid her off after 29 years of employment because of her age.

Cynthia M. Cook filed a federal lawsuit against the university on Tuesday, seeking damages in excess of $100,000.

Cook, who was born in 1957, worked at the university since 1980. She was an information specialist in the customer service center when she was laid off. She says in her lawsuit that she was passed over for other jobs by younger people.

When the university laid off Cook and six other service center employees in 2009, it cited a reorganization caused by budget problems.

University spokeswoman Jill Jess says the school believes the claims have no merit, but declined further comment.
