Unexpected hero steps up for Bishop Miege

SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan. - Bishop Miege football coach Jon Holmes received a few calls and text messages from college recruiters after last week's 37-20 win over Gardner-Edgerton.

"'Who's this Dante Hutton guy? Why don't we know about him?' I always tell them, 'Well, I really didn't know about him until this year,'" he said.

Hutton has burst on to the scene as a senior. He sat out last season after transferring from Raytown South. The Miege coaching staff had him lined up at receiver until just before the start of the season.

"He came up to us at the beginning of the year and said, 'Coach, I kind of want to try to play running back.' We felt like we were deep. Some guys got banged up early and he stepped up huge for us in these first two games," Holmes said.

The receiver has certainly shown a knack for running the football. He erupted for 161 yards and three touchdowns this past week against the Trailblazers. Suddenly, he finds himself as one of the top rushers in the league. Even Hutton has to admit he did not see this coming.

"Honestly, no. I didn't at all," Hutton said. "It just kind of happened."

For now, Hutton is just going to take this opportunity and run with it. He is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

"My parents really just keep me humble. The coaches and my teammates really are just humbling me, not letting me get a big head. So, I'll just keep working."
