The first of 800 buildings that are deemed not safe came tumbling down in Kansas City on Thursday morning.
The demolitions are made possible thanks to $10 million in city bonds. The first demolished building at 60th and Troost will now be sold for new construction.
“This is the city’s effort to eliminate all of the dangerous buildings in Kansas City. There are approximately 800 on that list,” said City Manager Troy Schulte.
Demolitions are starting with the first 200 buildings the city owns. The remaining 600 buildings up for demolitions are privately owned.
