KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Instead of undergoing chemo treatment to tackle lung cancer a local woman chose a route that had her in and out of the hospital in days.

Nancy Durant's doctor set her up with a thoracic surgeon after finding something alarming in her CT scan.

After meeting with Dr. Nirmal Veeramachaneni a surgeon at University of Kansas Health System, she was diagnosed with stage one lung cancer.

In fact, most of the lung cancer was in the lower lobe of her right lung.

Dr. V said he could remove the cancer in surgery. With a small incision, he would go through her ribs and remove the lower lobe of her right lung.

“Dr. V said 'Oh, in a couple of weeks you can go back to work,'" Durant told 41 Action News.

That piece of advice really sold her on the treatment option.

Durant spent three days in recovery after her surgery and within three weeks she was back at work.
