The city of Liberty broke ground on the voter-approved, $5 million downtown Streetscape reconstruction project Thursday at Liberty City Hall.
Once completed, downtown Liberty will have received a facelift above ground as well as some much-needed updates to infrastructure below ground. The project will include reconstruction of the streets, sidewalks and utilities around the Liberty Square area. Sidewalks will be widened to a more pedestrian-friendly 14 feet, new landscaping and crosswalks will highlight intersections and even parking will be upgraded.
"The downtown area has been the heart and soul of our community. It is a key part of what makes Liberty Liberty," said Liberty Mayor Lyndell Brenton. "Like a cherished heirloom, it provides us a proud sense of where we come from and who we are. The legacy of the downtown continues to be written and now it is our generation's turn to invest in our 194-year-old downtown, preserving our past while providing for the future. It is our responsibility to ensure this cherished heirloom will be enjoyed for decades to come."
Construction will be completed in phases through the end of the year. Neighbors can follow the construction progress by clicking here.
