KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs announced their initial roster moves on Saturday afternoon. All NFL teams needed to reduce their roster to 53 players before 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Chiefs waived the following players: quarterback Jordan Ta’amu; running back Elijah McGuire; wide receivers Gehrig Dieter, Jody Fortson, Maurice Ffrench, Kalija Lipscomb, Justice Shelton-Mosley; tight end Daniel Helm; offensive linemen Jackson Barton, Ryan Hunter, Greg Senat and Darryl Williams; defensive linemen Breeland Speaks, Braxton Hoyett, Devaroe Lawrence and Tim Ward; linebackers Omari Cobb and Darius Harris; defensive backs Rodney Clemons, Lavert Hill and Chris Lammons; and safety Adrian Colbert.

The team also announced the release of the following players: QB Matt Moore and RB DeAndre Washington.

Players are put on waivers if they have less than four years experience. Each NFL team will have an opportunity to claim the players exposed to the waiver wire. A team is awarded the player if they are the highest team on the waiver claim order. The order is based off the 2020 NFL draft selection order. If a player is released, they become an immediate free agent.

If a player clears waivers by 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, they are free to sign with any team or join any NFL practice squad.

The Chiefs also placed DL Mike Pennel and CB Bashaud Breeland on the suspension list. Pennel will reportedly serve a two-game suspension. Breeland will serve a four-game suspension.

Neither player will count on the active roster during the time of their suspension. The team will need to make a corresponding roster move once they have served their full suspensions and can be activated on the roster.

The Chiefs also placed OL Martinas Rankin on the physically unable to perform list. He will be unable to return for the first six weeks of the season.

Kansas City can begin to put together its practice squad after 11 a.m. Sunday. This season, teams can carry up to 16 players on their practice squad. It can include six veterans, regardless of their league experience, and 10 players with three years or less of experience in the league.
