Chiefs send Jamaal Charles into retirement in style

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Franchise rushing king Jamaal Charles stepped onto a field one final time as a Kansas City Chief on Wednesday at the club’s practice facility.

With fullback Anthony Sherman leading the way, Charles took a handoff from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a round of applause from several dozen players and coaches.

Charles, a four-time Pro Bowl running back, signed a one-day contract with the Chiefs.

He spent nine season in Kansas City, after being selected in the third round from Texas in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Charles rushed for 7,260 yards and 43 touchdowns in 103 games. He’s got 1,190 yards more yards than Priest Holmes, who is second in Chiefs history with 6,070 yards.

Additionally, Charles added 2,593 yards and 20 touchdowns receiving.

After the Chiefs released Charles, he spent one season in Denver, where he played 14 games in 2017, then played two games in Jacksonville last season.

He retires as the NFL’s all-time leader with a 5.4-yard average per carry (minimum 1,000 rushing attempts).

Charles tweeted a about his retirement and offered his thanks in a post on Instagram.
