KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs plan to use their franchise tag to keep defensive tackle Chris Jones with the team for the upcoming season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report the decision.

Jones became an integral part of the defense that skyrocketed the Chiefs to their Super Bowl victory.

Because Jones was slated to become a free agent, the Chiefs have the option to use their franchise tag to keep him with the team for another year.

In the 2019 season, Jones had nine sacks, 23 solo tackles and 13 assist tackles, despite a mid-season injury.

At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis earlier this week, General Manager Brett Veach made it clear the team hoped to keep Jones around.

“I would say that it would be a priority for us to make that happen,” Veach said.

Jones was a second-round draft pick for the Chiefs in 2016 and has been with the team ever since.
