LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Kansas director of athletics has been relieved of his duties.
On Monday, University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod said he spoke with Director of Athletics Sheahon Zenger and is relieving him of his duties, effective immediately.
Girod said in a news release Zenger has been a loyal Jayhawk and the athletics department has improved in many areas under his leadership.
"But athletics continues to face a number of challenges, and progress in key areas has been elusive," Girod said. "To achieve the level of success we need and expect, I have determined a change in leadership is necessary."
Girod said Deputy Athletics Director Sean Lester will serve as interim director.
Girod said he has also begun the process of finding a permanent athletics director. He's asked Drue Jennings to lead the process.
